On July 23, 2009, Steele Canyon High School freshman, wrestler and friend to many, Eric Paredes collapsed at home. Eric was a healthy 15 year old, who died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Eric's parents, Hector and Rhina Paredes, established the Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation in honor of Eric and to increase public awareness of Sudden Cardiac Death through education and action. One of the missions of Eric's Foundation is to screen high school students in hope of preventing other families from experiencing this same tragedy.
Dr. John Rogers, a San Diego area cardiologist and also the President of the San Diego Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association, has also been interested in performing these screenings in high schools to try to decrease the chances that a young person may suffer from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. The Paredes family, Dr. Rogers and many other volunteers from San Diego County have put together a program to provide free Sudden Cardiac Risk screenings for high school students in San Diego.
