BASIC INFORMATION
Auguts Heat screens students, ages 14-18 for HCM. HCM is the leading cause of sudden cardiac arrest in young people. HCM causes a thickening of the heart wall, and can lead to obstruction of blood flow and an erratic heartbeat. Symptoms are not frequently identified by those who have HCM. The condition effects 1 in 500 people.
SCREENING PROCESS
The free screening requires a signed parental waiver. A 12-lead ECG and 2-F echocardiogram are used at the screening. The screening process (registration, screening and check out) takes about 45 minutes.
