Rules
HeartMap SEATTLE Challenge
The HeartMap Seattle Challenge is a contest that will run from October 15, 2013 to November 15, 2013. Participants will be invited to submit information about the locations of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) throughout Seattle, WA. The data that is collected will be used to help improve access to these life-saving devices during when bystanders witness cardiac arrest.

How do you join the HeartMap Seattle Challenge?
1. Register as an individual or team.
2. Find and report the most unique AEDs in the City of Seattle within four weeks to win the $10,000 grand prize.
If a sufficient number of unique AEDs are identified to unlock the grand prize, then the team or individual that finds the most "confirmed," "eligible" AEDs by the contest end date will receive the grand prize of $10,000.
In order to unlock this prize, at least one individual or team must enter 500 unique AEDs or all contest participants collectively must enter 750 unique AEDs. Once the grand prize is unlocked by either approach above, this will be posted on the website.
2. Be the first to submit a report of a "Golden" AED and win $50.
We have pre-selected 20 AEDs in the City of Seattle as "Golden" AEDs. These are unmarked. You will be notified if you are the first to report the location of a “Golden” AED.
Contest Rules, Terms, and Conditions
The MyHeartMap Challenge Contest (hereinafter, the "Contest") is conducted by the University of Washington School of Medicine (the “University”). The promoter and administrator of the Contest is the MyHeartMap Challenge Study Leadership Team within the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, UW Harborview Center for Prehospital Emergency Care, (the “Study Leadership Team”).
Term
The contest will last for four weeks (the "Contest Term"). No registration or location submission will be accepted after the close of the Contest Term. The Study Leadership Team reserves the right to cancel the Contest at any time at its sole discretion.
Who can participate?
There will be several monetary prizes awarded for the HeartMap Seattle Challenge.
Participants are welcome to register either as individuals or as teams made up of several persons. If the Participant is a team, the team must designate a team leader who will serve as the designated Participant (as used in these Rules) and be the sole recipient of communications from the Study Leadership Team (including any prize) and the sole person to communicate with the Study Leadership Team regarding the Contest.
Participants can represent themselves or be the authorized representatives of a partnership, corporation, academic institution, or student group. If a Participant is an employee of a corporation or academic institution, enrolled as a student or otherwise representing their employer or academic institution in this Contest, it is their sole responsibility to review, understand and abide by their employer's or academic institution's policies affecting their eligibility to participate in the Contest. If a Participant is found to be in violation of their school's or employer's policies, they will be disqualified from the Contest and will be ineligible for any prize. The University disclaims any and all liability or responsibility for disputes arising between a student or employee and their school or employer related to this Contest. The University also disclaims any and all liability or responsibility for disputes within a team or between the “designated Participant” and the team he/she represents.
The Contest is open to individuals 18 years of age or older of any residency or nationality, except as provided below. Employees, and their immediate family members, of the University working in or with the University of Washington-Harborview Center for Prehospital Emergency Care are ineligible to participate. Employees and contractors (and their immediate family members) of the Contest sponsors or partners listed below also are ineligible to participate.

Seattle Fire DepartmentThe Contest is void for those countries and for residents of those countries where prohibited or restricted by US or Washington State law. The Study Leadership Team reserves the right to limit, or restrict upon notice, participation in the Contest at any time for any lawful reason.
Registration
To enter the contest, a Participant must register as a team or individual on the project web site (www.heartmap.uwctc.org) and complete all required data. Any mobile phone charges accrued from the transmission of information (via text, email, or other) in the contest are the sole responsibility of the Participant. Participants must accurately and fully complete the registration information request.
By submitting an entry, a Participant gives permission for his/her name and home town to be released in the event he/she wins any prize. Participant information will not be sold, but will be used for research purposes by persons affiliated with the University during and after the completion of the challenge. No other personally identifiable information will be published without the Participant's permission.
By registering, Participants agree to be bound by these Rules, and agree that all data submitted during the contest become the property of the University and may be used for any purpose. Without limitation, the AED data collected may be used for research, may be provided to emergency medical services (EMS), and may be used for mobile and web applications that provide AED data.
Team Participants must provide a team name and identify the team leader. The University in its sole discretion may change any inappropriate, publicly displayed team data, including the team name. The Participant's registration acts as consent to be bound by these rules for both the team leader and every member of the team.
Submissions & Prizes
To provide information about an AED location, Participants will submit "required" data via the project web site.
The following information must be submitted about each AED:
• Building address of the AED (street number, street, city, state, zip code)
• Building name and type
• AED location description (e.g. 2nd floor near the bathroom)
• Device functionality (Does the device appear to need service/maintenance now or soon?) (yes, no, I don't know)Participants may also enter additional information, labeled "optional," about the AED on the project web site.
Optional data:
• AED manufacturer name
• Contact name and email of the person or organization responsible for the device
• Prior use information (description of if the AED has been used before)
• Is the device in a public location or private location?A grand prize of $10,000 will be unlocked and available for award if at least one individual or team enters 500 or more unique, eligible AEDs, or all contest participants collectively enter at least 750 unique, eligible AEDs. Once the grand prize is unlocked by either approach above, this will be posted on the website. If the prize becomes unlocked, the team or individual that finds the most confirmed and eligible AEDs by the contest end date will receive the grand prize of $10,000. If neither of the conditions for unlocking the prize is met, no grand prize will be awarded.
AEDs eligible for a prize:
Eligible AEDs are those that are in fixed locations (installed, moored, wall-mounted) or assigned to a fixed location (e.g. drawer, shelf, cabinet, closet). For example, AEDs in police cars or on airplanes would not count for contest submission. Further eligible AEDs are not those in a personal residence, such as someone's home.AED confirmation:
The Study Leadership Team will verify entries in the following way:The locations of many AEDs in the region are already known. For the individual or team that finds the most unique AEDs, the Study Leadership Team will personally check a sample of their submitted AEDs from those not on our list by visiting the locations and verifying all the information or by using other means to confirm the accuracy of the information. If more than a small percentage of the AEDs reported in an entry are identified falsely/inaccurately, the team will be eliminated. The Study Leadership Team will then proceed to the team with the second-most AEDs and follow a similar validation procedure, continuing until a winner has been verified. If an AED cannot be found at the location identified, or if the AED was placed in the location reported after the challenge begins for the purpose of contest submission, and/or a fake, counterfeit, or replica devices are reported as if they were authentic AEDs, the AED will be considered to have been falsely identified.
The Study Leadership Team reserves the right to make all decisions, in its discretion, arising out of or relating to the Contest, including but not limited to determinations regarding submissions and whether any is incorrect or false in any manner. Any decision made by the Study Leadership Team as to the accuracy of a submission, or any instance of suspected fraud or abuse in the operation of the Contest, is final and binding and may not be challenged by any Participant or other interested party.
Any Participant or team that is first to identify a "Golden" AED will win a prize of $50 per "Golden" AED. Golden AEDs are unmarked and unknown except by the Study Leadership Team and are pre-selected prior to the start of the Contest Term. Participants will be notified if they are the first to submit a qualifying picture of a “Golden” AED. The Study Leadership Team shall be the sole arbiter of which Participant is first to identify each "Golden" AED, as well as the validity of all such identifications. Prizes may be awarded up to six months after the conclusion of the Contest phase.
By participating in the contest each Participant grants to the University an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to exercise any copyright or other proprietary in data submitted by the Participant. All submitted information must be lawfully obtained. Any violation of law or trespass committed by or on behalf of a Participant during the course of Contest participation, as determined by the University, will subject the Participant to disqualification.
Locations without AEDs or that an individual or team "wishes" had an AED
Participants may also submit information regarding locations without AEDs, or locations the Participants "wish" had an AED. This information is submitted at the discretion of the Participant and is not eligible for a prize. These reported addresses may be posted on the project website.General Contest Terms and Conditions
A. Play Fair
All Participants must play fair. This means that Participants must obey the law and may not interfere with the activities of other Participants. Participants may not tamper or interfere with the operation of the Project web site or mobile applications, or attempt to do so.
B. Delivery
Each Participant is solely responsible for the equipment and Internet access required to register, participate in the Contest, and submit information. The University takes no responsibility for lost, late, incomplete, stolen, misdirected, undelivered, delayed, inaccurate, garbled or incomprehensible information, or for any computer, telephone, cable, network, satellite, electronic or Internet hardware or software malfunctions, failures, connections, or availability, or for garbled or jumbled transmissions, or for service provider/Internet/Web site/use net accessibility or availability, traffic congestion, or unauthorized human intervention, or for inaccurate capture of any information, or the failure to capture any such information, irrespective of the cause of such occurrence, including, without limitation, errors or failures which may occur in connection with the processing or storing of information, the administration of the Contest, the uploading, processing, validating, posting and/or judging of entries, or the announcement of the Contest prizes or in any Contest-related materials. Entries delayed past the submission deadline of the Contest will not be accepted for review.C. Entries; Verification/Audit; Participant Cooperation
All activities relating to Participant's participation in the Contest and information submitted are subject to verification and/or auditing for accuracy and/or compliance with these Rules, and Participants agree to reasonably cooperate with the Study Leadership Team in any such verification and/or auditing. In the event that Contest verification activity or an audit uncovers non-compliance with the Rules or official Contest communications, as determined in the Study Leadership Team's sole discretion, a Participant's continuing participation and/or prize eligibility in any aspect of the Contest may be suspended or terminated.
The Study Leadership Team reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel the Contest should any virus, bug and/or other cause corrupt the administration, security or proper operation of the Contest. In the event the Contest is cancelled, the Study Leadership Team may, in its sole discretion, determine the winners from among all eligible and non-suspect validated entries received up to the time of such action.D. Tax Consequences
Receipt of any prize from the Contest may have tax consequences. Any and all tax liability for participation in the Contest or the receipt of a Contest prize is the sole responsibility of the Participant. The University will issue Contest-related tax reporting, as may be required by applicable laws and regulations. As a condition of winning the Contest and receipt and use of any prize, Participants agree to self-report to applicable taxing authorities, as may be required by federal, state, or local law.
Any winning participant will be required to complete applicable U.S. tax withholding-related documentation and any related documentation deemed necessary by the University to determine accurate tax reporting. Any failure to provide appropriate documentation may result in prize forfeiture. Contest prizes won by team leaders who are eligible minors in their state, province or country of residence shall be awarded to eligible minor's parent or legal guardian who must sign and return all required documentation and otherwise fulfill all requirements imposed on winners set forth herein.E. Rules Amendment
The Contest and its continuing terms and conditions, benefits and participation are offered to Participants at the sole discretion of the Study Leadership Team, which reserves the right to amend or interpret the Rules or official Contest communications and any element or elements thereof at any time, upon published notice to Participants on the Contest Web site. A Participant shall be deemed to have notice of any such amendments or interpretations upon publication of the same and shall be deemed to have accepted such amendments or interpretations by virtue of a Participant's continuing participation in the Contest. Should a Participant not wish to continue to participate in the Contest pursuant to the prevailing Rules, as amended or interpreted, a Participant may terminate participation in the Contest by abandoning their registration on the Site. All submitted material remains the property of the University.F. Rule Interpretation; Adjudication
The Study Leadership Team has the sole discretionary authority to construe the terms of these Rules, to reconcile any inconsistency, and to make determinations and reach conclusions, including both factual findings (regarding Contest winners and otherwise) and the application of these Rules to such facts. The Study Leadership Team reserves the right to make all decisions, in its discretion, arising out of or relating to instances of suspected abuse, fraud, error or anomalies in the operation of the Contest, including the Contest Web site, or any other interpretation, activity or suspected violation relating to the Contest, and such decisions are final and binding. The Study Leadership Team reserves the right to disqualify any Participant or team for actions deemed to violate the spirit of competition for any reason, including but not limited to the violation of laws or regulations in the course of participation.
Any aggrieved Participant further agrees to submit to the Study Leadership Team via certified mail to UW Harborview Center for Prehospital Emergency Care, Box 359727, 325 Ninth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104 for internal adjudication a written statement concerning and fully describing any grievance for review and response. The response and decision by the Study Leadership Team shall be final and binding on a Participant.G. No Warranty
THE UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS EACH OF ITS RESPECTIVE OFFICERS, TRUSTEES, FACULTY, EMPLOYEES, REPRESENTATIVES AND AGENTS (COLLECTIVELY, THE "RELEASED PARTIES") EXPRESSLY DISCLAIM ANY AND ALL WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND (WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE), INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO, IMPLIED WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL RELEASED PARTIES BE HELD RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY USE OF THE INFORMATION AND/OR PRODUCTS PROVIDED AND/OR MADE AVAILABLE IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONTEST OR FOR ANY ERRORS OR ANOMALIES RELATING TO THE CONTEST OR ANY INFORMATION CONNECTED WITH IT, ANY UNINTENDED OR ERRONEOUS PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST, OR THE AWARD OF CONTEST PRIZES OR OTHER BENEFITS UNDER THE CONTEST TO PARTICIPANTS. RELEASED PARTIES OFFER NO ASSURANCES, GUARANTEES OR WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS THAT THE CONTEST, CONTEST WEBSITES, CONTEST MOBILE APPLICATIONS OR CONTEST INFORMATION WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED OR ERROR-FREE AND DO NOT GUARANTEE THE ACCURACY OR RELIABILITY OF ANY INFORMATION OBTAINED IN CONNECTION WITH THE CONTEST. RELEASED PARTIES ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY COMPUTER-RELATED DAMAGES DUE TO DOWNLOADING MATERIALS. RELEASED PARTIES WILL NOT BE LIABLE, AND ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE, FOR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND RELATED TO A PARTICIPANT'S PARTICIPATION OR INABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CONTEST, WHETHER THE DAMAGES ARE DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL, OR OWING TO PARTICIPATION, ANY DECISION TO CANCEL THE CONTEST, OR OTHERWISE. Participants agree to release, defend, indemnify and hold harmless Released Parties from and against, and accept all responsibility of any kind, including but not limited to financial, for any liability, claims, losses, damages or proceedings, including but not limited to property damage, personal injury, or death, and including a reasonably attorney's fee, relating to any action taken by a Participant, including but not limited to efforts to locate AED's, or the submission of location information, or anyone else using a Participant's registration or team password, acting as a member of Participant's team, or otherwise purporting to act on Participant's behalf in regard to the Contest (whether or not such use occurred with or without Participant's permission). Participant also agrees to release, defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Released Parties from any and all liability, claims, losses, damages or proceedings, including but not limited for death (including reasonable attorneys' fees) relating to Prizes and any other matter in connection with a Participant's participation in the Contest or the University's use of Participant's registration or information submitted.These rules, terms and conditions specified here comprise the Contest's official Rules and, together with the Contest site's terms of use and official Contest communications or publications by the University, shall govern and apply to all participation and activity arising out of and relating to the Contest and use of the Contest Web site. These Rules cannot be modified or superseded except by the University, in its sole discretion.
Legilslation
Many are working to establish legislation requiring CPR education in schools or getting AEDs in schools or public places. The National Conference of State Legislators provides great information regarding current AED and CPR laws.
Alabama, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Vermont all have legislation requiring CPR education in the classroom. 25 states are currently working on passing legislation requiring CPR education in public schools.
Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, and Tennessee have laws addressing AED programs in educational settings.

The Heart
The heart is a muscle about the size of a fist. It contracts and relaxes in order to pump blood throughout the body. The heart consists of four chambers: the right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. The right side of the heart receives blood that is low in oxygen. It pumps the oxygen-depleted blood through the pulmonary arteries into the lungs where it becomes oxygen-rich. The left side of the heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps blood through the aorta. Blood leaving the left side of the heart provides oxygen delivery throughout the body. After delivery, the, now oxygen-depleted, blood travels through the veins and returns to the right side of the heart. And, the cycle continues…

Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Youth
Awareness of sudden cardiac arrest in youth is increasing. In young people, 13-23, sudden cardiac arrest frequently occurs with physical activity. Common conditions associated with sudden cardiac arrest in youth are: Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart) and Long QT (unusual heart rhythms).
